New Megashredder® to be Built

New Megashredder ® to be Built at Upstate Shredding on ‘Round-the-Clock' Schedule

San Antonio, TX, (October 3, 2010) —Riverside Engineering today announced that it will begin installation of a new model M-122 Megashredder ® at Upstate Shredding LLC in Owego, New York commencing on November 26. The initial phase of the installation is scheduled to occur over eight days with Riverside 's field staff and local trades working in shifts, 24-hours a day to complete the project. “What usually takes several weeks in our industry for this work will be done in days. Upstate's yard is one of the busiest in the country. By completing the new in-feed roller conveyor system and downstream ferrous metal separation system quickly we will cause minimum disruption allowing shredding and processing to continue as usual while we work,” said Rusty Manning, Riverside's Director of New Equipment Sales. A second phase that includes the shredder section will be installed in February also on a similar expedited schedule.

Custom built for Upstate, the Riverside M-122 has a rotor diameter of 122 inches, it is among the largest shredders in the world and the highest capacity currently on the market. It can process up to 400-tons of ferrous material per hour, uses 1,000 pound hammers, and can ingest the largest vehicles on the road today including 18-wheel tractors and trailers and buses. Designed to accommodate a 10,000 hp motor, the M-122 represents the latest advancements in machine automation and computer controls for maximum processing efficiency, safety, noise reduction and energy conservation. The new in-feed system is a steel-belted conveyor that delivers raw scrap metal into the feed chute of the shredder. The new downstream and ferrous metal separation system consists of fourteen conveyors and six SGM 72 x 110 inch electromagnetic drum units. Two of these are specialized polishing drum magnets that retrieve electric motors and steel that is contaminated with other materials such as waste or copper.

Adam Weitsman, president of Upstate Shredding-Ben Weitsman & Son commented on the project: “We are a rapidly expanding company investing in the best available technology upgrades, but at the same time our Owego facility must continue to operate seamlessly to process the growing volume of metals arriving from our customers and feeder yard operations. We look forward to a smooth transition from our present shredder to the new M-122.” This upgrade to the facility is one hundred percent debt free.

When the switch-over to the M-122 occurs, the currently operating Newell 120-inch shredder will be available on the used equipment market.

“We have worked with Adam Weitsman, president of Upstate for many years. It brings us a lot of satisfaction that Adam has faith in Riverside Engineering to do a quick installation and make a major change over without causing problems. We are proud to make this positive contribution to his operation,” said Jim Olson, co-owner of Riverside.

Upstate Shredding is the largest privately held scrap metal company on the East Coast and one of the fastest growing according to a recent ranking in Inc. Magazine. Over the past few years the company has made substantial investments in plant and equipment, including a $25 million dollar upgrade to its Owego operation that recently saw the installation of the world's most technically sophisticated non-ferrous metal separation system. The company is progressing towards an annual goal of $1 billion dollars in annual debt-free sales. It operates two facilities in Owego, one each in Binghamton and Ithaca and recently acquired scrap metal companies in Syracuse, Jamestown and Liberty, New York, and is in the process of acquiring a new facility in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Demand Shaver

Riverside Engineering Releases "Demand Shaver"
Press Release 4/16/2010

Riverside Engineering has developed and launched a Shredder Energy Demand Management program that reduces peak demand usage and saves operators an average of 20 to 30% in energy costs! The company's Demand Shaver system is a proprietary algorithm with user selectable parameters that automatically controls the shredder feeding and material flow to smooth power consumption and eliminates expensive spikes in energy demand. The PLC-based program monitors real-time power consumption, shredder data including RPM, Load and Motor Thermal Capacity. Based on the monitoring of these process variables, Demand Shaver will adjust Infeed and DFR to an optimal rate based on the utility rate structure with minimal impact to overall production volumes. M-69 Shredder and Downstream

Riverside Engineering M-69 Shredder and Downstream System Introduction

Riverside Engineering, a leader in auto shredder systems, has introduced its new M-69 Shredder series. The M-69 X 107 design utilizes many of the technological advances found in the company's MegaShredder® product line. The engineering challenge was to retain the critical features of the MegaShredder® in a smaller shredder at a more affordable price to ensure a high ROI with limited risk for monthly processing volumes in the 3,000 to 8,000 tons per month range.

When powered by a 2500 HP drive motor, the M-69 shredder system is capable of processing more than 75 tons per hour. The M-69 can handle whole car bodies, white goods, light industrial scrap, lightly compressed logs and bales due to its high inertia rotor and heavy hammers. The complete system package includes shredder, motor drive, infeed, one magnet downstream, single roll feeding, chute and controls package. Riverside 's M-69 equipment package is complemented by project management and installation services.
